Dressing for a Japanese winter — warm, not heavy
The three-layer rule our leaders use, and what you don't need to buy in Thailand.

Coaches and shops are warm; outside can be below zero. Dress in layers you can take off.
Base layer
Thin thermal top and leggings that wick sweat — inexpensive in Japan too.
Mid layer
A sweater or fleece that comes off easily indoors.
Outer layer and shoes
A wind- and waterproof coat, gloves, a hat — and non-slip rubber soles, most important for older travellers.
